Exciting update! A few years back, Norm Fujita, who serves as the Environmental Chair for the Rotary Club of Healdsburg Noon, partnered with the Russian Riverkeepers to tackle the removal of the invasive plant Arundo Donax along the Russian River's banks. Building on that achievement, Norm and our District Environmental Chair, Barbara McChesney, initiated collaborative removal efforts with Rotary Clubs throughout Sonoma County, involving both Interact members and Rotarians from across the district.
Removing Arundo Donax from the Russian River is a crucial objective for the Russian Riverkeepers, as this invasive species transforms the river from a natural fire barrier into a pathway that can exacerbate wildfires. Highly flammable, Arundo burns intensely and, in windy conditions, can spread embers quickly. Additionally, this plant consumes around 8 million gallons of water per acre each year, depriving the river and displacing native flora that support local fish and wildlife.
This vital project has garnered the attention of the international Rotary magazine, which is preparing an article for publication.
